The Entomology Section has two primary functions. Firstly
to advise the oil palm industry of Papua New Guinea on all pest
problems, other than pathogens, and make recommendations on control. The
main pests are long-horned grasshoppers, stick insects, bagworms,
rhinoceros beetles, leafhoppers, plus other minor insect pests, rats,
snails (pests of the cover crop) and plant pests such as mimosa and Siam
weed. The second function is
to undertake research on the control of these pests, particularly using
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques as well as overseeing the
health of the oil palm pollinating weevils and work on the conservation
of other species of insects.
